What is Investment gold according to Bulgarian law
Under Article 160 of the VAT Law in Bulgaria, investment gold is exempt from Value Added Tax (VAT). This includes both gold bars and certain gold coins that meet specific legal criteria.
Gold bars and coins
To be classified as investment gold, the product must be in the form of gold bars or coins that are accepted on the gold market and have a minimum purity of 995/1000 (99.5%).
Investment gold coins
Gold coins also qualify as investment gold if they meet all of the following conditions:
Minted after 1800
Have a gold purity of at least 900/1000 (90%)
Are or have been legal tender in their country of origin
Are typically sold at a price not exceeding 180% of the gold value contained in the coin
These conditions ensure that both gold bars and qualifying bullion coins can be purchased in Bulgaria without VAT, making them an attractive option for long-term investment.
Is investment gold subject to VAT?
No, under both European Union legislation (Directive 2006/112/EC) and the Bulgarian VAT Act (Article 160 of the VATL), investment gold is exempt from Value Added Tax (VAT), provided it meets specific criteria related to purity and form. These criteria ensure that only certified gold bars and coins of investment-grade quality qualify for the exemption.
What is the difference between investment gold and gold jewelry?
The key difference lies in purity and taxation. Gold jewelry usually contains a lower gold purity (often 14K or 18K) and is subject to VAT, while investment gold is VAT-exempt and must meet strict purity standards. Jewelry prices reflect not only the gold content but also design and manufacturing costs. In contrast, investment-grade gold—such as bars and bullion coins—is valued based on its weight and the live market price of gold, making it ideal for long-term wealth preservation.
